Welcome to Jazz Dance Fest Hamburg - a celebration of the vibrant and rich tradition of African American vernacular jazz dance rooted in culture and history!
This event welcomes anybody who has a deep love for the dances and culture of the vernacular jazz dance continuum like Tap, Blues, Charleston, Lindy Hop, Hip Hop, Soul and many more. Jazz dance is known for its improvisational nature, rhythmic complexity, and personal expression. We welcome dancers from diverse backgrounds, skill levels, and ages, aiming to foster an environment that celebrates diversity and encourages collaboration and cultural exchange.
During the event, we will have one cohesive group of participants that will stay together throughout the entire time. Bring your individual skill set and dancing experience- this workshop is open to all levels.
On Saturday, get ready for 5 hours of dancing, immersing yourself in the joy of movement. In the evening you are invited to join the vibrant swing dance party organized by our friends over at SWINGWERKSTATT: The famous Dockside Swing Party, this time featuring the wonderful music of the live band The Swingin’ Hermlins! The Party takes place at the Nochtspeicher, Bernhard-Nocht-Straße 69a, 20359 Hamburg.
On Sunday, we'll have 2 hours of dancing to keep the energy flowing. Following the dance sessions, we'll engage in a creative workshop. This workshop provides a unique opportunity for exchange, inspiration, and connection with fellow participants. It's a chance to share ideas, explore new perspectives, and deepen your understanding of the cultural significance of this dance and the art form of jazz. There will also be some delicious cookies!
Join us for a fulfilling weekend of jazz dance, rhythm and community! We can’t wait to dance with you!
Angela Andrew is a multi-faceted artist. Performer, choreographer, writer, producer, vocalist, teacher... A first-generation hip-hop dancer on the streets of Hackney where she was born and raised. She started Lindy Hop in 1991. Angela's work is varied and trailblazing. During her six-year tenure as Artistic Director for Rhythm Tap N' Swing (Lyon, France), she successfully rebooted the dance scene; forging strong links between music organisations and dance disciplines both locally and nationally. Angela is sought after for her heritage dance style but also for her breadth of knowledge of the art form which is quite unique in the industry. She has proven to be an authoritative voice in the profession, her finger on the pulse of current developments and well-versed in the inter-generational conversations around diversity and inclusivity. She accomplishes this with her Mentorship Program (working with many of the leading artists and academics across the AAVJazz discipline), teaching at Performing Arts institutes such as LAMDA, advising many festivals, artists etc.. Angela is extremely happy to be returning to Hamburg, one of her favourite dance communities.
